Crypto in Sligo, Letterkenny and the North-West

A region with one university course, one old map pin and a UK border at Derry. Here is what is verified, what is not and an online-first way to buy.

Status check, 5 Oct 2026: CEX.IO says it is not onboarding new EU/EEA customers while its MiCA application is under review in Spain, so confirm availability for Irish residents first. Crypto is high-risk and you can lose all the money you put in. Read our status notes.

Sligo, Donegal and Leitrim have no Bitcoin ATM that we could verify on 5 October 2026, no verified meetup and almost no local crypto businesses. The north-west has two real data points: a postgraduate blockchain course listed at Letterkenny, and a single business at Burtonport that told a crowd-sourced map it accepts bitcoin. Everything else you need to do, you do online. This page explains what each of those points does and does not tell you, how Derry across the border changes the picture, and how to buy from a rural address.

Three counties, three different amounts of nothing

Sligo

County population 70,198, town 20,608 (Census 2022, via Wikipedia). No ATM, merchant, meetup, firm or search footprint found. A search for "bitcoin atm sligo" echoed the query and nothing more.

Donegal

County population 167,084, Letterkenny 22,549. One ATU course listing, one BTC Map pin at Burtonport (checked May 2023), no verified machine or meetup.

Leitrim

County population 35,199. Nothing found at all. It is the smallest county in this guide and has no town with its own search footprint.

Letterkenny and the ATU course

The strongest-evidenced item in the north-west is academic. The postgraduate directory postgrad.ie lists an MSc in Blockchain Technologies and Applications from Atlantic Technological University (ATU) at Letterkenny, running for one to two years with a listed fee of €6,300. It is the only dedicated blockchain master's we found outside Dublin.

Treat that carefully. The listing is an aggregator, not ATU itself, and carries no date. One search result also mentioned Killybegs as a delivery site, and we could not confirm either campus on ATU's own course page. If you are thinking of enrolling, check the campus, the intake date and the fee with the university before you plan a move. If you only want to understand crypto, a postgraduate degree is overkill; our guide to how to invest in crypto is a free place to start.

What the course does tell us is modest but real: there is academic interest in the subject in Donegal. It does not tell us there is a local market, a meetup or an ATM. We found none of those.

Burtonport: one pin from 2023

BTC Map, a community-maintained map built on OpenStreetMap data, lists one Donegal merchant, a thatching business at Burtonport, with a survey date of 7 May 2023. That is more than three years old. There is nothing for Letterkenny, Donegal town, Sligo or Leitrim.

It is worth saying what a pin is. Someone added a business to a map and said it takes bitcoin. Nobody from this site has verified it, and the business may have stopped, moved or never done a transaction. A phone call settles it in a minute. Tourists reading this should know that most Irish pins are trade and professional services, not cafes or hotels, and the data set for the whole island is only a few dozen entries.

Rural banking and why online is the default

We do not have county-level data on branch coverage, mobile signal or broadband speeds for the north-west, so we are not going to claim a rural disadvantage we cannot measure. What we do have is a national picture from Wikipedia's summaries: Ulster Bank announced its exit from the Republic in February 2021, closed its remaining 63 branches on 21 April 2023 and handed back its licence in June 2025, and KBC Bank Ireland ceased trading in April 2024. Whatever the effect in Ballina or Buncrana, the direction of travel is towards the app.

For a person who already does their banking by phone, buying crypto is the same pattern. You open an account with a regulated platform, verify with a government ID, send euro by SEPA from your Irish account and buy. Our bank-transfer guide shows each step. If your mobile signal is patchy, do the identity check on wi-fi, because the selfie and document steps use the camera and can time out on a weak connection.

What you actually need to get started

Four things: a phone or computer with a working camera, a government photo ID (passport or driving licence), proof of address such as a recent utility bill or bank statement, and an Irish bank account that can send SEPA payments. That is the whole list. You do not need a local agent, a branch or a trip to Galway. If the platform asks for a source of funds on a larger sum, a payslip or a sale document is the sort of paper it means.

Isolation cuts both ways. A person living far from a town may have fewer people to ask, and that is exactly the gap scammers fill with a friendly "mentor" on WhatsApp. If anyone you have not met contacts you about crypto, offers to manage your money, or asks you to install remote-access software, stop. The Central Bank's consumer pages and our scams guide describe the pattern in detail. Demands for a "release fee" or "tax payment" before you can withdraw your own money are a classic warning sign.

Euro examples for an online purchase

Using fees that providers list, with the usual advice to confirm on their sites, here is what a €600 purchase costs. CoinJar, an Irish-authorised firm, lists 1 per cent for a bank-funded buy and 2 per cent for a card: €6 and €12 respectively, before any spread. Revolut's Irish pricing page, in an archived copy of 15 March 2026, lists from 1.49 per cent on its standard plans: €8.94. A different platform lists a card deposit fee of 3.75 per cent plus €0.25, which on €600 would be €22.75. The same €600, different routes, and a difference of more than €16 between the cheapest and dearest listed here.

Those are the costs that never vary by county. Spreads and withdrawal fees come on top. Our fees comparison shows how to uncover both.

Derry, Strabane and the border

If you live in Donegal, Derry is probably your nearest large city, and it is in a different legal system. It has about 85,000 people in the 2021 census. BTC Map shows two Derry pins (a restaurant surveyed in 2022 and a shop updated in 2026) plus others at Omagh and Newtownstewart. Ulster University has a campus in Derry. We found no meetup and no ATM.

Because Derry is in the UK, the Financial Conduct Authority governs crypto there. Its press release, last updated 6 February 2026, says no crypto ATM operator is registered and that an unregistered machine is illegal. If you see a machine in a Derry shop, do not use it. The UK side (FCA, sterling, HMRC) is outside this guide. A search for "bitcoin cafe derry" also returned Derry, New Hampshire.

Who regulates what you will use

Most of the firms that serve a customer in Sligo or Letterkenny are not Irish. Kraken is authorised in Ireland. Coinbase is authorised in Luxembourg, Revolut's crypto arm in Cyprus. That is allowed under MiCA's passporting rules, and our page on Irish crypto regulation explains how it works. For any provider, find the exact legal entity and check the ESMA interim register; then read the Central Bank's crypto consumer information.

Tax, for the record

If you sell €9,000 of bitcoin that cost €6,000, the gain is €3,000. Take off the €1,270 exemption and €1,730 is taxable, so 33 per cent is €570.90. For sales between January and November, that is due by 15 December. Gains are taxed where you live, not where you buy. Budget 2027 is on 6 October 2026, so re-check rates afterwards, and see our guide to crypto tax in Ireland.

Nearest meetup

The nearest active group we can confirm is the Galway Bitcoin Meetup, a monthly gathering on the last Sunday at 6pm, with the venue changing between Eyre Square and Oranmore according to the Meetup Breakdown newsletter. Galway is roughly 145 kilometres from Sligo and Letterkenny by our research notes (approximate, and by road it is longer than it looks). See the Galway page.

Where Sligo and Leitrim fit

Sligo (20,608) and Letterkenny (22,549) are the two main towns, and the usual way to read these three counties is as a chain along the Atlantic side of the island, each pulled towards a different larger centre: Sligo towards Galway and Dublin, Letterkenny towards Derry, Leitrim towards whichever neighbour is closest. That is geography, not data, and we found no source that measures it for crypto users. It does explain why we did not write three thin pages. A reader in Manorhamilton and a reader in Ballyshannon have the same practical options, and the same absence of local services, so one page serves them better than three that repeat each other.

If a local group, accountant or shop does appear, we will add it with a date. Until then, the county map on our locations hub shows which page covers which county.

What we could not find

We did not find a verified machine, a merchant in Sligo or Letterkenny, a meetup, a crypto accountant, or a local firm. We could not confirm the ATU campus, intake or current fee. We did not research local scam reports or credit union policy in these counties.

Quick answers

Questions people ask

Is there a Bitcoin ATM in Sligo?

We could not verify one on 5 October 2026. Searches for Sligo returned no Irish machine and no autocomplete suggestions, and the only Irish operator that published addresses now has a parked website. We found no sign that one exists, but we also could not prove that none does.

Can I study blockchain in Letterkenny?

A postgraduate listing site shows an ATU MSc in Blockchain Technologies and Applications at Letterkenny, 1 to 2 years, with a fee of €6,300. One search result also mentioned Killybegs, so check ATU's own course page for the delivery campus and current intake.

Is there a Bitcoin ATM in Derry or Letterkenny?

We found none. For Derry, which is in Northern Ireland, the FCA says no crypto ATM operator is registered with it and that unregistered machines are illegal. Searches also surfaced Derry in New Hampshire, which is not the same place.

How do people in remote parts of Donegal buy crypto?

The same way as anywhere: online, with a regulated platform, funded by SEPA transfer or card. All that is needed is a phone or computer, ID and a bank account. There is no local branch involved, so distance from a town does not matter.

Should I buy crypto in Derry because it is sterling and close?

If you live in the Republic, use a euro platform regulated for Irish customers. UK platforms fall under different rules, and your Irish tax obligations do not change. The UK regime (FCA, sterling, HMRC) is outside this guide.

Is crypto taxed differently in Donegal?

No. Irish capital gains tax is national: 33% on gains over the €1,270 annual exemption, with payment due 15 December for sales in January to November. Re-check rates after Budget 2027 on 6 October 2026.
