Waterford city has no Bitcoin ATM that we could verify as working on 5 October 2026, and nothing we found in the county contradicts that. What the internet does have is a lot of other Waterfords. If you typed "bitcoin atm waterford" into a search engine, the machines in front of you were very probably in Connecticut or Michigan. This page is short on glamour and long on how to avoid wasting a journey or, worse, a deposit.

The wrong-Waterford problem

When we ran the search, every result with a machine attached was American: kiosks operated by Coinhub, CoinFlip and Bitcoin Depot in Waterford, Connecticut and Waterford, Michigan. Not one Irish item appeared. The autocomplete box was no more helpful; the only suggestion after "bitcoin atm waterford" was about what Bitcoin ATMs are used for.

It is common to be fooled. Many directory sites generate a page for every town name in a database, put a map on it and fill it with filter text. Because the template works for any Waterford, the page looks authoritative and tells you nothing. Here is a short routine for sorting a real listing from a template.

  1. Look at the country

Is "Ireland" in the address, with a Waterford eircode starting X91, or does it say a US state? A state abbreviation such as CT or MI is the giveaway.

  2. Look for an Irish operator

Names such as CoinFlip, Bitcoin Depot or Coinhub are American. A listing with no operator name at all is a warning too.

  3. Look for a date

A page that shows when the machine was last seen online beats one that shows nothing. Anything older than a few months, treat as a rumour.

  4. Phone the shop

A convenience store or shopping centre can say in ten seconds whether a machine is there and switched on. This is the only check that counts.

The same trap catches Wexford, where our own search returned Wexford, Pennsylvania, and Ennis, where it returned Texas. Our South-East hub covers Wexford, Kilkenny and Carlow.

What the research did and did not find

Two older claims mention Waterford. In November 2022, the operator Bitcove posted that it ran about twenty machines across Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway, Waterford, Westmeath, Laois and Wicklow. We saw that only as a search snippet and it is nearly four years old. An aggregator also carried a listing for a machine in a shopping centre in the city. It gave no operator and no sign of whether the machine was on.

Against that, the operator's website, bitcove.ie, currently shows a hosting company's holding page with an expired certificate, a news site that once covered Irish machine launches returned a server error, and BTC Map, a crowd-mapped database, contains no ATM entries on the island apart from one out-of-date Dublin record. None of this is proof of closure. It is a strong reason not to rely on an old listing.

So the honest line is this: Waterford was named in 2022, nothing from 2026 supports it, and we are not going to point you at a doorway. Our national Bitcoin ATM page keeps the full evidence log, and we update it if a machine is confirmed.

What Waterford has instead

Not much of it is crypto, but it is useful to know. BTC Map holds no pins in Waterford city or county. We found no active Waterford meetup, and our survey of a weekly meetup newsletter through September and early October 2026 did not list one. We also did not find a crypto firm based in the city. The regulated firms that serve Irish customers are mostly in Dublin; Cork has one. Southeast Technological University is the city's third-level institution, but we did not research whether it teaches anything on blockchain, so we say nothing about it.

Population is context only: Waterford and Kilkenny together form a built-up area counted at 60,079 in Census 2022, and the county stands at 127,363, per Wikipedia's summaries of CSO figures. That is a substantial market with no local crypto infrastructure we could verify, which makes the online route the practical one rather than a second best.

Buying from Waterford, in euros

The route is the same as for Tramore, Dungarvan or Dublin. You open an account with a regulated platform, complete identity checks, send money, and buy. A few specifics are worth having in your head.

A SEPA bank transfer from your Irish current account is usually the cheapest way in. Our guide to buying crypto by bank transfer covers the steps and the typical bank questions. Card payments cost more: one platform lists card deposits at 3.75 per cent plus €0.25, which would turn a €200 purchase into €7.75 of fees before any trading charge. Revolut, if you already have the app, lists a crypto fee from 1.49 per cent on its standard plans (an archived copy of its Irish pricing page dated 15 March 2026), which would be €2.98 on €200. All figures need confirming on the provider's own page before you pay, because several were seen only in archived copies.

The bigger risk is not the fee. It is the lookalike. The Central Bank maintains a warning on unauthorised crypto-asset service providers, and our scams guide shows how fake brokers use real-looking names. Before you register anywhere, search for the legal entity on the ESMA interim MiCA register and match the name exactly.

Selling and getting money home

Going the other way, you sell on the platform, withdraw euro to your bank by SEPA, and then use your normal bank card. The guide to selling crypto deals with why a bank can query a transfer from an exchange, and how to prepare a short explanation of where the money came from. Do not be talked into a cash meeting with a stranger who offers a better rate. In our checks there was no verified Waterford office, shop or agent that exchanges crypto for notes.

Three mistakes we see with local searches

The first is trusting the pin. A map pin is a claim by whoever made it, on a date nobody shows you. The second is assuming that no ATM means no way in. For most Irish buyers the online route was always going to be the main one, and it comes with an identity check, a written record and a regulated firm behind it. The third is taking the "nearest machine" advice from an American directory seriously. A page that tells a Waterford reader the closest kiosk is "within 5 miles" is calculating from the wrong country.

There is a quieter fourth, which is paying a premium for convenience. Promotional blogs claim Irish kiosk fees ran at 5 to 10 per cent. We could not find an operator-published fee schedule to test that, so treat it as a claim, not a fact. Compare it with the euro figures above: on a €500 purchase, 5 per cent is €25 and 10 per cent is €50, against about €7.45 at Revolut's listed 1.49 per cent. Even if you could find a working machine, you would want the receipt before you agreed.

A worked tax example

If you bought €4,000 of crypto and later sold it for €6,500, the gain is €2,500. Subtract the €1,270 annual exemption and €1,230 is taxable. At 33 per cent, the capital gains tax is €405.90. A sale between January and November is payable by 15 December, and one in December by 31 January. The return for the year is due by 31 October following the tax year, and Revenue's manual TDM 02-01-03 confirms that swapping one coin for another and spending crypto both count as disposals. Our capital gains page goes through the calculation, and Budget 2027 lands on 6 October 2026, so check the rates afterwards.

The nearest community

The only active South-East group we could confirm is Bitcoin Wexford, which a third-party newsletter lists for the last Thursday of the month, 7pm to 9.30pm, at Red Books in St Peter's Square, Wexford. Wexford is roughly an hour from Waterford by road (approximate). Dates for September 2026 were listed, so the next on that pattern would be Thursday 29 October 2026, but confirm before you set out. See the South-East page for more.

What we could not find

We could not verify any working machine, a Waterford meetup, a local OTC desk, or a crypto-accepting business. We did not search Waterford news archives for local scam reports, and we did not check what the main Irish banks do at branch level in the city. If you have first-hand knowledge of any of this, our contact page is the place to say so. The wider county list is on the locations hub.

Quick answers

Questions people ask

Is there a Bitcoin ATM in Waterford?

We could not verify one on 5 October 2026. An aggregator listing and a 2022 post by a former operator both mention Waterford, but the operator's site is now a parked domain and we could not confirm that any machine is switched on. Phone the host premises before you travel.

Why do Waterford ATM searches show American towns?

There are several places called Waterford in the United States, and kiosk operators there publish many location pages. In our check, the only machines returned were in Waterford, Connecticut and Waterford, Michigan. Search engines match the name, not the country.

How do I buy crypto in Waterford?

The same way as anywhere in Ireland: verify with a regulated platform, fund the account by SEPA transfer, card or an existing Revolut balance, then buy. It takes minutes once your identity is verified, which can take longer. There is no local office to visit.

Is there a crypto meetup in Waterford?

We did not find an active one. The nearest confirmed meetup in the South-East is Bitcoin Wexford, held monthly on the last Thursday according to a third-party newsletter. Check the listing before travelling because venues and dates change.

Do I pay tax on crypto in Waterford?

Yes, as everywhere in Ireland. Capital gains tax is 33% on gains above the €1,270 annual exemption. Disposals from January to November are payable by 15 December. Re-check the rates after Budget 2027 on 6 October 2026.

Can I sell crypto for cash in Waterford?

There is no verified physical cash route. The realistic method is to sell on a regulated platform, withdraw euro to your Irish bank by SEPA, then use your bank card or branch. Be wary of anyone offering to meet and pay in cash.
